I was driving home from my bio psych midterm when out of no where I see two dogs dart across the street through fairly heavy traffic. I looked around to see if there was someone who looked like the owner nearby, but there was no one walking on the sidewalks and one of the dogs didn’t have a collar. It didn’t seem to phase any of the other drivers on the road. Alarmed, I sped into the nearby parking lot and ran out of my car into the street where I forced the dogs off the road into a safer area.

After getting the dogs into the parking lot of a library I continued to try and calm the dogs down, who at this point in time began to cry as they anxiously walked around. Being somewhat cautious for my own safety I checked the brown dog’s collar but was disappointed when I found there was no tag attached. It seemed they were looking for a way home, wherever that was. The brown dog continued to cry, and the white one ran over repeatedly to lick his face in an attempt to reassure him that everything would be ok.

Shortly after being in the parking lot the dogs decided to take off and run to a large park behind the library. Still worried about the safety of the dogs and anyone else they might come into contact with I followed closely and called some friends to see if they could help out. As the dogs passed a couple of older women who were doing stretches in the grass, they commented on how cute the dogs were - but were surprised when I asked if they knew who the owners were. They told me they had no idea and assumed that I was. They thanked me for my efforts but continued with their stretches as I chased the dogs who were going further on their search.

Thankfully, the dogs were more than friendly to everyone they came into contact with. After about half an hour of following these two mutts around the park, passing little children and other dogs even, it seemed the dogs were too frightened and preoccupied to stop moving. My friends arrived and were too very curious on what was going on. Although I didn’t like it at the time we decided to call the local animal control and try to get the dogs taken care of. The brown dog was getting more frightened as time went on so I held him by the collar and tried to get him to relax, and the white dog ran back to offer gratuitous licks to his face. It was a heartwarming yet incredibly sad display of reassurance and companionship between two friends, and I couldn’t help but feel the churning of anger and disappointment in the pit of my stomach for the owners that neglected to care for these beautifully innocent dogs.

About an hour after I initially found the dogs an animal control unit officer arrived in a truck designed to carry cages and tools to capture stray animals. Upon arriving, the officer immediately recognizes the dogs and asks us to try and hold them in place for they will run upon seeing his face. Shocked, I asked him what he means and he stated that these dogs have escaped or been released numerous times by their neglectful owners. I grew infinitely disappointed. Shortly after, he pulled out a long rod and hook and dragged the whimpering dogs by the neck, despite their absolute best efforts to resist. They were loaded in the truck and hauled away. We were thanked for our help, but that didn’t really matter. I was heartbroken seeing the dogs being choked and dragged back to the truck and knowing that everyday they are with their neglectful owners they risk being in danger. At that point Alan commented, saying that upon learning about their living situation he’d wish the dogs to stay in the pound instead.

The series of events that took place, from start to end, just wasn’t acceptable to me. Not only were two dogs running through a major intersection during the middle of the day, but no one else out of the several people we crossed seemed to care enough to do anything (save one man who was a dog owner himself) or make an effort to find a solution to the problem - if not even for the safety of the dogs or for the safety of people around them. Drivers, upon passing the dogs, continued driving regardless of the real possibility that the dogs could be hit by other cars. Hearing that the dogs repeatedly escape or are released, who knows if the dogs will survive to run around another day. They very easily could have been killed today, or any day before for that matter - but they will be returned to the same neglectful, selfish owners who cared enough to pay the money for the dogs but don’t have it in them to see to it that the animals are being taken care of. When the safety of the animals you own, who are dependent on you to survive, is left up to a stranger like me who found it in his best interest to keep them safe then you’re plainly FAILING as a pet owner, or a person as a whole. Lives shouldn’t be left to chance. If you buy a dog, aka purchase another animal life to add to your family, or even have a child of your own for that matter - you’d only be selfishly cruel to disregard them to the extent that their lives are in danger. Realize for a second that your life has a greater purpose than tending to your own self-absorbed happiness and take care of other animals that depend on you, be it dog, human, or not.
